On 1st February, 1918, the 9th Royal Fusiliers battalion of 36 Brigade, 12th Division moved into brigade reserve in the Rouge Debout sector near Sailly-sur-la-Lys from where they provided working parties for various tasks on a daily basis. During the evening of 1st March, the day before they moved forward into the front line, the enemy heavily bombarded the support and back areas of the brigade front and the HQ of A Company on the left received five direct hits resulting in a number of casualties. One of these was Robert Blake.
